I got all these popups, and warning messages (probably fake), but I don't know how to get rid of them . An example of a message would be: Spyware activity detected. System halted. Open Question: I need help with search engines!?

Ok, my problem is that I go on a search engine(Google,Dog Pile,Yahoo,Mamma ect.)and type in something and things that are related pop up but, the source they come from, are not the actual source, none of them, their source is usually from a thing called Free Scan and I accidentally clicked on it once thinking it would be the address I wanted and it told me my computer had a virus and it tried running a diagnostic on my computer. I have spy ware and when this pops up my AVG says it is a fake threat. Anybody got any ideas? This just started happening last week. Open Question: How to recover a password protected user profile from an external hard drive?

I had a nasty virus and removing it ate so many file I needed to reinstall Windows (XP Pro). Before doing so I cloned the drive onto an external HD. I checked it; all the data minus the virus was there. I reinstalled XP Pro and got most of my data back except from one user profile. I had password protected my login and stored a lot of data in folders on the desktop. Now I'm unable to access that user folder to get my data. (The files are all there. If I run a virus scan I can see it all being checked out.) My question is this: how can I access that folder to get my data back? A friend recommended I change ownership of that old profile to my new one. Not sure what he's talking about though.... more

Open Question: Why cant i download or watch anything?

First when I used Internet Explorer, it went crazy slow. I used ctrl+alt+delete and it said the cpu usage was 80%+. When i tried downloading things, it wouldn't work. Wether it was adobe flashplayer or microsoft updates. I couldnt download anything at all. It says 0% and says : "Internet Explorer cannot download 'whatever the download is... whatever the website is.' Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." I also couldnt watch anything wether it was youtube, veoh, megavideo, etc. Its just a black screen where the video is supposed to be. I resolved the high cpu usage problem when I disabled the yahoo toolbar add-on. Then I uninstalled it. Ive tried turning on I.E. without add-ons, tried scanning comp for viruses etc, tried turning off Windows/McAfee firewall, tried system restore, But im still not able to watch or download anything. I can play internet games but I lag bad and get disconnected a lot. I am using windows xp and this all started happening out of nowhere at same time. Open Question: Computer locks up when internet browser is open.?

This will be a long one... I was on my new HP laptop computer the other day doing what I do everyday, just using my internet browser. My computer locked up with a permanent hourglass, and CTRL+ALT+DELETE would not function. The only way to do anything was to shut down my computer manually, by holding the off button. Every time I start it up it usually works until I bring up the internet browser window (internet explorer), and then crashes about 2 minutes after. I have started my computer in safe mode and ran virus scan 3 times, in which it does not crash in safe mode. No viruses or threats were found, so I started up my computer again in non-safe mode. I reset my browser settings. I also tried to update my browser. None of this has worked, and my computer is still crashing. PLEASE HELP!!! more

Open Question: My computer is taking forever to load. What's wrong?

My computer is taking absolutely FOREVER to load. It's always been a fast unit but one day last week it took a long time to load. I'm running Windows XP on here (a Sony VAIO desktop, pentium 4) if it helps. When the blue Welcome screen comes up, I click on my page and type in my password, but from there it is taking up to 5x longer than normal to load. This happened once last week, and worked perfectly fine until yesterday. It did it again, and now every time I turn this thing on it happens. I ran a spyware check and a virus scan and both came up empty. What could be wrong, and how do I fix it? more

Open Question: i need help with my computer?

ok two questions (1).when i try to run AIM the log in bar thing loads up but only for 2 seconds and it then goes away and the only thing on the bar is a continue button. i have tried to uninstall and reinstall so many times. any help. Open Question: :( What's wrong with my computer?

Okay so recently out of nowhere my computer has been starting up slow. Well, it's been starting up fast and normal but when my desktop loads, my McAfee Security Center should be the first thing loaded and then there should be a pop up of it before it disappears and then MSN Messenger would load. Now my McAfee Security Center is like the last program on my desktop that loads and my MSN Messenger doesn't even load at all! The icon is at the bottom but it doesn't even sign me in automatically like it always does (and yes I already checked to see if I unchecked the sign me in right away). I already had a virus/spyware scan for 5 straight days in a row so nothing's wrong but my Internet out of nowhere has been freezing, and that's never happened before. I'll just click on the Internet, it quickly loads like normal, and then freezes! And when I'm already on a web page and I click on something else and it opens to a new window, sometimes, it'll freeze and then I'll have to End Task all of my Internet windows! And I already deleted over 1000 things/images from my computer but the free space isn't even increasing a bit! In fact, it decreased a little!And now when I click on links on any "Microsoft Word" Document, it freezes! more

My computer was infected with a virus last night that puts porn on my desktop & gives me the bluescreen of death. It also prevents me from running a virus scan so I can't perge it. I think I accidently downloaded the virus off of Limewire [please don't give me a long speech about how bad Limewire is, ok?]. Now, when I first realize I had gotten a virus last night, I saved all my files to my backup drive. Is the virus on my backup? If it is, how can I get it out without damaging another computer?. more

Open Question: Strange firewall / trojan horse problem. Help needed.?

I have a Packard Bell MV35-202 lap top which runs Windows XP. I protect it with the default Windows firewall. AVG 8. Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes. I've used this combination for three years now, and up until now I've never had a virus. My neighbour has been using my computer over the last few days, and he seems to have got it infected with something. He's deleted the temporary internet files, so I can't see what he's been looking at, but he's very religious, so I doubt it's any obvious danger sites like porn or anything. The problem is something keeps turning off my windows firewall. I keep turning it back on setting it to allow no exceptions, but after a while it keeps turning off again. This has happened five or six times since the day before yesterday. Also AVG8's resident shield keeps popping up telling me it's removed something called Trojan Horse Clicker, again five or six times in the last couple of days. I've updated and scanned with AVG8. Spybot Search and Destroy. Malwarebytes, Windows malicious software removal tool, and the online scanner Cure It Dr Web. None of them find anything. Not even AVG8 despite the fact that it's resident shield keeps removing this Clicker thing. Anyone got any idea how I can sort this out? I'm not a computer genius, so I'd appreciate any advice given, to be in laymans language. All help will be greatly appreciated. more

Hello guys, I have a problem. I'm not sure what happened, but recently i got a virus, and i deleted it because i checked my virus scan check etc, and it found 16 files infected so i deleted them (Avast! Antivirus) and checked again and everything was fine, working etc. Now yesterday i was not on my computer 90% because i was playing the wii. Only my dad was on, but then he left the room, today i wanna open up the computer and the icons don't work, the home button doesnt work, ctr alt del doesn't work, nothing! the cursor just moves around but it doesnt do any actually clicking. The screen you could say is frozen but the mouse isnt...what is the problem? can someone help me fix this? I downloaded a new virus protection and when i finished i did restart my computer and the icon did appear at the bottom near the time . Look, I uninstalled Limewire last night, after scanning my computer of viruses. I had a bunch, and blamed that. So, it was deleted. Right after, my Firefox crashed. Thinking it was just a bug, I checked Internet explorer. It worked. But only until I restarted my computer. After that, I could get no web pages. However, I did check AIM/MSN. Both messengers work and I can send files/messages/anything. So, it's just the web browsers. It won't let me open EITHER virus scanner; one of them gives an error report, the other one doesn't show up at all. All other programs work. (checked the SIMS2, Adobe photoshop cs3 extended, and a few other accessories. I'm on a windows XP <33 more

It is disguised as an anti-virus, i have a continuous pop up balloon that says i have a security problem, then every now and then i get a window trying to scan with this fake anti-virus, so i just quickly close it. i was googling stuff and all the sudden this website started dowloading sstuff, my comp sais do you want to continue it could have a virus n I clicked no, stopped everything n then just ran a scan that did not detect anything. Should I worry? What should I do? I use norton internet security if that helps!well its the norton protection center actually, not just internet security. more

Open Question: how do i get rid of the winlogon virus?

i've had this lil bho bug on my computer for a while. i think it is part of that cws thing u know coolwwwsearches. cuz everytime i do a search, the results come up but the links redirect me to a fake site. when i ran a scan with avg i found some tracking cookies. when i went to delete the cookies a box popped up saying "nothing to do" i have avg, ad-aware, spybot, cclearner, avast, hijackthis, malware and vundofix but nothing is working. here r the two files on my hijackthis that keep showing up each time.
